Mother's Day - Mothers Day - When is Mothers Day?
Mothers Day is celebrated around the world. Mothers Day is that special day each year that mothers get to be pampered, dined out, lavished with gifts and get thanked for their unselfish unconditional love and for everything they've done for us. For the gazillion things our mothers do for us, we give her ONE special day out of 365 days in a year when we can lovingly say "Mom, you don't have to do the dishes today... tomorrow is fine."
So, when is this special day? When is Mothers Day? Well, most countries, including the United States, Australia and Canada, celebrate Mothers Day on the second Sunday in May. So this year, Mother's day falls on May 13, 2012.
Other countries like Spain (Dia de la Madre) and Portugal (Dia da Mãe) celebrate Mothers Day also in May but on the first Sunday, and so this year Mothers Day for them falls on May 6, 2012.
In the United Kingdom, Ireland and Nigeria, Mothers Day is known as "Mothering Day" and it is celebrated on the fourth Sunday in Lent. So this year Mothers day falls on March 18, 2012.
In Norway, Morsdag (Mothers Day in Norwegian) is celebrated on the second Sunday in February. So this year, Mothers Day celebration in Norway falls on February 12, 2012.

The History of Mother's Day / Mothers Day
It is said that the concept of Mother"s Day came from a form of mother worship in Ancient Greece which kept a festival celebrating the "great mother" of Greek gods named Cybele. It was celebrated around the middle of March.
The Romans also had a festival known as Matronalia - dedicated to the god Juno. On this day, mothers were given gifts.
As the Romans converted to Christianity, this celebration became a part of the liturgical calendar as Laetare Sunday. This took place on the 4th Sunday in Lent to honour the Virgin Mary and the "mother church." In the 16th century, people went to their ‘mother’ church for a service on this Sunday. In later times, domestic servants were given a day off to visit their mothers and family.
The roots of Mothers Day history can also be traced in the UK where Mothering Sunday was celebrated much before the Mothers Day celebration started in the U.S. The celebration of Mother's Day as it is seen today is a recent phenomenon and not even a hundred years old. Thanks to the hard work of the pioneering women of their times, Julia Ward Howe and Anna Jarvis that the day came into existence.
Today, Mothers Day is celebrated around the world and is a hugely popular festivity. Millions of people across the globe take the day as an opportunity to honour and pay tribute to their mothers--thank them for all their love and support.
Mothers Day has become tremendously popular and it's been reported in several countries that phone lines witness maximum traffic on Mother's Day. I'm sure this has changed with the invention of the cell phones.
There is also a tradition of gifting flowers, cards and others gifts to mothers on Mothers Day.
According to the National Restaurant Association, Mothers Day is now the most popular day of the year to dine out at a restaurant in the United States. Here in Canada, you definitely need a reservation to dine in your favourite restaurants on Mothers Day, and mothers are usually handed a carnation at the door.
According to IBISWorld, a publisher of business research, Americans will spend approximately $3 billion on flowers, just over $1.50 billion on gifts and just under $70 million on greeting cards. It is also estimated that Mothers Day will generate about 8% of the annual US jewelery revenue.

My Mother
My mother was only four years old, when her mother died. During my mother's school days, children were required to wear flowers called cadena de amor (chain of love) on Mothers Day. The children whose mothers were dead wore white cadena de amor, and the children whose mothers were alive wore pink cadena de amor. My mother was the only one in the whole class who wore white flower year after year. Mothers Day was the saddest day of my mother's life when she was a kid.
My mother passed away three years ago, and I miss her so... most specially on Mothers Day. I am so lucky and thankful to have my mother with me all those years--others, like my mother, are not so lucky. They say you never really appreciate your mother until you'd become a mother yourself. How true! I think of all the times when I was a thorn on my mother's side. I'm so sorry, 'Nay. ("Nay" is short for "Nanay" which is Filipino for mother.) Thank you so much for being there for me all those years.
Happy Mothers Day, 'Nay! I miss you, most specially on Mothers Day.
By the way, the most traditional Mothers Day flower is the carnation. Pink carnations represent gratitude and love, while red carnations signify admiration. White carnations are traditional flowers to give or wear in honour and remembrance of a mother who is no longer living. I will be wearing a white carnation on Mothers Day. What about you?
Happy Mothers Day to all Mothers in the world.

Voted up, it's a lot more useful than the basic hub I did on the date of Mother's Day haha :)
Wonderful hub, Rosie. I am thankful for all the years I had my mother. She's been gone 30 years now and I still miss her.
Another great hub Rosie! I had forgotten about the carnation and the colors of pink, red and white and their meaning. My Grandmother would always buy white ones for her and I to wear in remembrance of my mother. Voted up and awesome!
