Walking can be hazardous to your health
80
I love walking. I do a 30-minute power walk everyday.. well, almost everyday. Did you know that you burn virtually the same number of calories whether you run or walk a mile? Seriously! You just get there faster if you run. And aside from walking as a great form of exercise, researches prove that walking is good for you in terms of major reductions in both diabetes and heart disease, decreases in high blood pressure, increases in bone density, and that's only for starters.
"Walking is man's best medicine."
- Hippocrates
Well, I say Hippocrates must have been a very smart dude!
But walking can also be hazardous to your health!
A few days ago, while I was walking, I saw a new condominium being built and on top of the building sat a red crane with a half moon in the background. "What a beautiful sight," I thought. As an amateur photographer, I was thinking that would have been a fantastic shot had I brought my camera with me. When suddenly I was flying in the air like I just hit the baseball and I was running as fast as I could and then diving to reach the first base diamond before the first baseman caught the darn ball. But since it was not on the baseball field but on a concrete sidewalk, I landed hard on my right knee first while still sliding forward scraping the skin off my right knee and putting a hole on my favourite blue jeans. Then with a thug the right side of my face hit the pavement.

Are you all right?
A biker stopped and asked me if I was all right..."Are you all right?" I couldn't answer because I was in total shock and in so much pain, so I couldn't really say if I was all right or not. But he kept on asking "Are you all right?" Well, I thought since I'm not dead, I should be all right then. So I mumbled "Yes" and tried to get up. My right temple felt it was going to explode so I put my hand where the pain was, it was wet. I look at my hand, it was bloodied. Now I could feel the warm blood dripping down my cheek.
The biker said "Your face, it's bloody." and I said "Yes". I found a tissue in my pocket and tried to stop the bleeding. And then I sat on the kerb. The biker again asked "Are you all right?" At this point, I wanted to slap him silly while screaming "NO, I'M NOT ALL RIGHT!!!", but that wouldn't be nice, would it? Also I couldn't manage that physically. I was in so much pain and I was disoriented. But I wanted the biker to stop asking if I was all right and just be off and leave me alone. So I forced myself to say "Yes." The biker left.
But he came back with another biker. This other biker looked HOT. The HOT biker asked me the same question, "Are you all right?" I found out that even in a state of shock, your brain can still recognize who's HOT and who's not... but you cannot answer a simple question with a simple answer--yes or no. So I said "No" and then said "Yes." I took the bloodied tissue off my face and I asked, "Is there a big cut on my face?" The HOT guy said "No. There are just two little cuts but that's a lot of blood. The bleeding has stopped tho'."
"Do you live around here?" he asked. I said "Yes."
"Can you walk home?" I said "Yes."
"Can I get you something?" I said "No."
"Let me go get a cold compress for you." I said "No, I'm ok."
"I just live two houses away, I'll be right back." He came back with a cold compress wrapped in paper towel followed by his lovely wife. I said thank you and pressed it on my face. That felt good. It actually took the pain away for a few seconds.
The wife asked the same question "Are you all right?" I said "Yes, thank you." She left.
The HOT biker said "I hate to leave you here. Do you want some water." I said "No, go ahead. Thank you for your help. I'm all right now."
After a few minutes sitting on the kerb, I was ready to move on. I had two choices: either go back home or continue with my walk. A person in her right mind should go home, take two Advil, then lie down and take it easy. I decided to continue with my walk. Why for God's sake you might ask. Didn't I say "a person in her right mind"?
While I was walking, a thought crossed my mind. "What if I had a concussion and just dropped dead while walking?" Then I would die doing something I like to do... walking... although if I had a choice I would rather die in my sleep. Remember that guy who wanted to die while asleep like his grandfather, not screaming in terror like the passengers in his car?
I finished my walk without dying, went to the bank, and did my grocery shopping. Then I went home took a shower, took two Advil, made myself a big mug of caramel vanilla coffee and ate a big slice of chocolate cheesecake that my daughter made the night before. Life was good.
The next day though, life wasn't so good. I woke up with a humongous headache. I couldn't move my leg without screaming in pain and my face had a big bump that also hurt like crazy. Luckily no broken bones, just badly bruised ego.
So there you go... walking can be hazardous to your health. But it can also make you fly.

Interesting news on the hazards of using mobiles and texting while walking
- 15-year-old Alexa Longueira of Staten Island, New York suffered some scrapes and bruises after she suddenly fell six feet through an open sidewalk manhole - and into raw sewage - while she was walking and texting.

Christopher Cepeda's three friends noticed the car as they were trying to cross a highway near Orlando, but Cepeda, apparently distracted by his cell phone, did not, and stepped into the roadway, according to the Polk County Sheriff's Office.

- Six million Britons were injured last year bumping into lamp posts, bollards and litter bins while trying to walk and text on mobile phones at the same time. New figures reveal that more than one in ten needed treatment for injuries including broken noses, cheekbones and even in one case a fractured skull. Research among 1,055 adults discovered that 63 per cent concentrate so hard when they are texting that they become “blind” to objects around them.

- Some doctors and safety experts are increasingly concerned about pedestrians who use phones and other electronic devices. They say deaths and injuries are becoming more common because people are distracted while talking on the phone, texting or listening to music through headphones.
Source: Distracted Pedestrians An Increasing Risk by ADAM HOCHBERG
- You've probably seen them on the street: cell-phone chatting, music-loving pedestrians who sometimes act as if talking into a mouthpiece or slipping on a pair of headphones raises an impenetrable shield. But preoccupied pedestrians, especially those listening at high volume, risk more than hearing impairment. Their absorption can create a loss of "situation awareness" similar to that of distracted drivers. Inattention can have serious - even deadly - consequences on roads and railroad tracks.

Awwww, Rosie! Are you all right??? (Just kidding) I'm glad you were not seriously injured! Take care, Girl!
The first week I was over in Italy visiting my son, I took a bad spill in downtown Vicenza. My knees hit the cobblestone street and I didn't bounce! First thought was I broke my knees! I had people bent over in my face talking a mile a minute in Italian! I did catch the Italian word for ambulance and that motivated me to painfully rise...I would have appreciated an "are you all right?" then...lol
I kinda hate to laugh, but it was funny. I have been in your situation, but have not had the pleasure of flying or a hot guy coming to my rescue. Bummer he was married. LOL
Hey Sugar....you know my thoughts...."why walk when you can ride." lolol
Great Hub! I can personally relate to your hub. I've had a similar fall as you describe in this beautifully written Hub. As a matter of fact, I've had three bad falls over the last year. Like you I continued to walk because that's me. Thank you for sharing such an interesting and enjoyable hub.
Gosh, it can indeed by shockingly hazardous to your health. Glad you are okay. :) Seriously, I do agree about walking being wonderful for one's health. I make sure I get my 30 to 45 minutes walk at least five times a week. I enjoyed your hub immensely. :)
Ripplemaker's Joyful Announcement: Congratulations, this hub is a Hubnuggets Nominee. Check out the Health Category! Hubbers who love this hub can vote right here: http://bit.ly/g9NhfZ
Congratulations ROSIE on your hubnuggets nomination! Voted and rated it up too! I bet that this hub will come first with the highest number of votes and you will win. Jason
Rated up and awesome!
Love the article it gets my thumbs up!
Hi Rosie,
Congrats on your nomination! I really enjoyed your article!
The Baking Guru
This is a great hub. I actually did injure myself a little walking. My husband broke a bone just walking one time. So, it seems like such a benign activity, but it can be risky! Just depends on what you accidentally trip over or get hit by...
Rosie201 you inspire me. I use to walk every day and now I live in an area where I cannot walk. I will move next may and start my routine again. I love walk.
Hi Rosie, your excitement is contagious you had me grinning ear to ear.. (see....g r i n) hehe The Hubnuggets Team does a wonderful job of choosing the Hubnuggets Wannabes! A task that is quite challenging with all the talented hubbers around. But I am so glad this hub was chosen! Congratulations and best of luck to you! :)
Rosie, I hadn't considered this angle on walking before. I walk around our neighborhood where construction is happening almost non-stop. I need to be more observant. Thanks for the insight!
sorry for your accidents - I agree that walking can be dangerous - I trip quite often too or stub my toe - ouch! Entertaining reading. Congrats on the nomination and good luck.
Rosie, very funny hub ... you made me laugh. Sounds like your life is full of adventure .... great job! Congrats on your nomination!
Hi girl love your hub. Congrats I bet you will win. Voted up. Love ya.
I'm glad nothing serious happened to you.
I also love walking, 1hr a day for my exercise, good thing nothing like that happened to me. it makes me think to always be careful next time.
Write on Rosie! congrats on the nomination, i wish you well. These little accolades make the hub experience enjoyable. When someone notices a job well done we find it a motivating force for us writers, to refine our craft and push to the skies.
Peace Sister ~ gregZ says UP!
Thanks for the nice article.. paying attention where you put your feet is very important, and texting while walking is just silly IMHO.. Walking is a great way to burn fat, especially if the more intense forms of exercise are just to hard..
Hiya Rosie! Congratulations that this hub of yours is a hubnugget winner and you have come second with 27% of votes!
I wrote in my comment days before that "I bet that this hub will come first with the highest number of votes and you will win" See, I told you that you will win and because you have won, I won that bet.
I am very much sure that right now you are feeing that you are up in the skies and very much excited. Have a good day and once again "CONGRATULATIONS"! Jason..
Hi Rosie,
Saw this hub was a hubnugget winner and clicked on it cause I'm an avid walker and couldn't imagine how walking could be hazardous to your health. Love the layout, photos, captions and how you managed to put levity into a subject that was basically serious.
Congratulations on your award. This hub deserved to be a winner.
Rosie... there's nothing like a face plant into the concrete. Poor thing!! I admire your ability to get right back into the saddle and ride the horse that just bucked you off- not crazy.. just determined! Loved your hub... and congrats on the Hubnugget award!
A great looking hub, a great story with a 'hot' guy and glad to see you are OK. Well done Rosie2010 and congrats on winning a hubnugget. I'm sure we'll see more of you around HP. Cheers Marie.
I fell down a flight of stairs "walking" to the bathroom (it was in a house I wasn't familiar with in the middle of the night) about two months ago. I thought for sure I was breaking my shin bone as I thumped down the stairs on my butt and leg which was folded underneath me. But fortunately, nothing was broken. I attribute that partly to the fact that I walk on a regular basis (happens to be my last name, too :-)), and particularly enjoy walking up hills for the cardiovascular workout it provides. I avoid walking on the streets (too many distractions, uneven pavement, noxious fumes from cars, etc.) and prefer the nicely paved road of the botanical garden near my home. The air quality's better, too, although it's easy to get distracted with all the beautiful flowers and greenery.
Glad to know you weren't seriously hurt! And congrats on your big win! A hub of mine was nominated when I first started writing here. It was a big boost to my confidence and encouraged me to keep writing, so I hope you do, too.
I'm disappointed! I thought you were going to tell the HOT biker that you were not all right, and then he would take you home and tend your bruises. But seriously, walking can be hazardous to your health. I have a fear of dogs whenever I go walking in my neighborhood. But thank God, I've never been attacked.
Great story, glad it turned out well. You never know what life has in store, just a bad step can ruin your day or worse. Applause for your determination to continue your enjoyable walk after that terrible fall.
Hi Rosie! So sorry about the accident. But the first part of this hub is a positive reminder to Mama Sez and me to continue our early morning walks three times a week to get the benefits you mentioned.
Cheers!
Hey Rosie, are you alright? Sure you were alright enough to notice the guy was hot. Lol.
Another cool rosy hub.
Cheers!
I loved reading your hub. I was convinced that at the end you were going to say that you had a concussion. I'm glad that you didn’t actually have a concussion, although the effects of your fall sound very painful. Like you, I love walking and power walking. I like taking photographs as well, so I can understand why you got distracted on your walk!
I love this! You are so spot on - in a state of shock you can still tell who's HOT!!! hahaha
I had a pretty serious car accident which actually put me in the hospital for several months and even though I can't recall the accident or much of anything else - I do remember the HOT intern in the emergency room! Glad you are okay - Thanks for the good laugh!
Dear Rosie, sorry for your pain, but your hub did make me smile :-). A great read. Cheera, Edlira.
Loved it !! I like to walk but my back wont let me do anything longer than a mile or two..if I do then im in agony for a day or three !! So I agree ,walking can be bad for your health in more ways than one !! ..hope the pain didnt last too long for you .
G'day Rosie ... like you, I love to walk and have had a few close calls with an uneven pavement. Your hub was a great read but I couldn't decide if it was funny or awesome. May all your future walks be hazardous-free. Thank you for sharing...
Hello Rosie, the title caught my attention. How could walking be hazardous ! I laughed as I read it. You are indeed a good writer, and this hub certainly deserved the award. Glad to know that you survive with no sub-effect. I have known people who tripped over a hole on the road, and they had to go for physiotherapy due to knee injury.
I'm glad to hear you're okay...but I mighta' milked it j-u-s-t a bit for the hot guy! Funny, I would have noticed him too, and may have even feigned an inability to walk without assistance. I need to walk more, and despite your adventure, I am inspired by you.
Hey there!! This was great! All I kept thinking was about the line from that song..."Isn't it ironic when you find the man of your dreams and then you meet his lovely wife?"
I found your story funny and cute. voted way up!
Hey there Rosie. If I was walking by, I would of helped!lol Great article, congrads on the award, and keep up the good work. Very well written. Voted up.
I so agree! Walking is so dangerous! I run into and trip over things all of the time. Darn, that ADD or is someone playing an evil trick on me and moving thing. The last bad time I 'ate it' I walked right off my deck. I don't know what I was thinking or doing. There's always been a step down but for some reason one Sunday morning I didn't see it. I think it might have moved on me, sprained the ankle pretty bad that day, lol. I like you can laugh about it now. I also keep having these near misses with the cubicle walls at work. Someone must be moving things around I can't possibly be this clumsy.
Funny hub, enjoyed it, and voted up! You're an awesome writer.
*ouch* I trip over things all the time, and have to always watch my feet.
It's especially dangerous in this city - sidewalks and streets are typically cobblestones, made much worse by ice damage! It seems that the council doesn't have enough money (or people) to fix any of the problems.
Being on the look out for photo opportunities doesn't make things easier!
I think it's lovely that people stopped to help though! And congrats on the HubNugget!

Hi Rosie2010, I enjoyed reading your hub and realised now that it could be the new thing for adrenalin junkies with all the danger involved! Cheers, Michael.
